The First Robotics Competition provides high school students with the opportunity to pursue their interests ranging from business and graphic design to engineering and technology. The competition not only enhances participants' knowledge, it encourages leadership and shapes students to become well rounded, confident individuals.
Each year, around January, a game manual is released describing the competition for the season. Teams gather together to discuss an optimal strategy and build a robot to suit their goals. In addition to this, they create several documents describing how their team impacts the community and create a business plan to help raise funding to support their team.
Under strict rules, limited resources, and the guidance of volunteer mentors including engineers, teachers, business professionals, parents, alumni and more, teams of 25+ students have just six weeks to build and program robots to perform challenging tasks against a field of competitors. They must also raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and perform community outreach.
